A bold statement from a racing legend: Max Verstappen's take on the new F1 cars has sparked a fiery debate.
After testing the latest Red Bull model in Bahrain, Verstappen shared his honest thoughts, describing the new generation of cars as "not fun to drive" and comparing them to "Formula E on steroids."
On the second day of the three-day Bahrain test, Verstappen held his first press conference of the year, having completed an impressive 136 laps the day before. His feedback focused on the driving experience, highlighting the increased emphasis on energy management.
"To be honest, they're not a lot of fun to drive," he said. "It's all about management, and it doesn't feel like Formula 1 at all. It's more like an amped-up version of Formula E. But we have to work with the rules as they are."
Verstappen, known for his outspoken nature, continued, "As a driver, I thrive on pushing the limits, but with these new rules, that's not possible. Every input I make affects the energy levels significantly. It's not what Formula 1 is about. Maybe I should just switch to Formula E, where energy management is the name of the game."
He went on to express his frustration with the current state of the sport, saying, "We're energy-poor, and I just want to drive normally, without having to worry about braking techniques or gear changes impacting my straight-line speed. The grip levels are also quite low with these tires and car setup. It feels like a step backward."
Verstappen's comments have caused a stir, especially considering his status as a four-time world champion. He acknowledged the hard work put in by his team and Red Bull Powertrains, but stood by his opinion, saying, "I can't help but be honest about how I feel. I didn't write the regulations, but if it were up to me, the cars would likely look very different."
His concerns about the 2026 rules have been voiced for years, and he has suggested that his enjoyment of the sport could influence his decision to leave F1 before his current Red Bull contract ends in 2028.
"A winning car is not enough for me. It has to be enjoyable to drive as well," he emphasized. "At this stage of my career, I'm exploring other avenues for fun outside of Formula 1. I know we're stuck with these regulations for a while, so we'll see how it goes."
When asked about the Nurburgring 24 Hours, which has been rescheduled to avoid clashing with the F1 calendar, Verstappen joked, "At least there, you can drive flat out without worrying about your battery! I'd love to do it, and we're working on making it happen, but I can't confirm anything yet."
