Instead of the usual track time, the duo spent a day at the circuit in an Innovation Race Car Super Development (IRC SD) machine, an experience that offered a unique perspective.
"It was a cool experience to not only drive the IRC SD but also to coach Emily Caccaviello," Cameron shared with V8 Sleuth. "The West Circuit has some tricky corners, and Turn 6, in particular, caught us off-guard. We wanted to learn the circuit inside out, so we could hit the ground running during the enduros and not waste precious practice time.
One thing that immediately stands out is the team's focus on eliminating 'driver excuses.' By ensuring they know the circuit intimately, they can shift their attention solely to car setup when they arrive. It's a strategic move to ensure they maximize their performance and avoid any potential pitfalls.
BRT engineer Chris Fitzgerald's presence during the day further highlights the team's commitment to preparation. "Last year, we struggled at Tailem Bend," Cameron explained. "We're taking a proactive approach to ensure we're on top of our game and can focus on the car's setup without any distractions.
The IRC SD, according to Cameron, shares several traits with a Gen3 Supercar, making it an ideal tool for their preparation. And it wasn't just about the driving; they also made adjustments to the car to help Caccaviello drive it more aggressively, which is an interesting insight into the team's approach to driver development.
"It was great to see Emily's progression throughout the day," Cameron added. "She did an excellent job, and it was a beneficial experience for all involved.
As the Australian IRC Racing Series resumes at Ipswich this weekend, Caccaviello will be putting her skills to the test. And with the upcoming Castrol Supercars event at Sandown offering a range of throwback liveries, the stage is set for an exciting weekend of racing.
