Ford Offers 'Olive Branch' to Diageo in Crown Royal LCBO Boycott Saga
In a surprising turn of events, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has once again hinted at a potential retreat from his controversial threat to remove Crown Royal from the LCBO. However, this time, he's setting conditions for a peaceful resolution with the international alcohol giant, Diageo.
On Wednesday, Ford proposed an intriguing compromise, suggesting that Diageo could avoid the LCBO boycott if they presented a comprehensive plan to create 160 new jobs in Ontario. This proposal comes as a response to the closure of a Crown Royal bottling facility in Amherstburg, which Ford initially threatened to retaliate against by pulling Crown Royal from the LCBO.
"If Diageo can demonstrate their commitment to replacing the lost jobs through manufacturing, carton production, and other initiatives, we can work together," Ford stated during a news conference. "I'm open to discussions and willing to find a solution that benefits Ontario's economy."
The tension between the Ford government and Diageo began in the fall when Diageo announced the closure of its Ontario facility and its relocation to the United States. This decision sparked outrage from Ford, who vowed to use the LCBO, a taxpayer-owned entity, to retaliate against Diageo.
In early January, Ford's stance seemed unwavering, urging whiskey enthusiasts to 'stock up' on Crown Royal. However, recent developments have shown a shift in his approach.
Ford's initial criticism came from various quarters, including a consumer advocacy group, federal Conservative MPPs, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, and Quebec's finance minister. These figures warned that Ford's actions could negatively impact workers in their respective provinces.
On Monday, Ford's tone softened, indicating a willingness to negotiate. He described himself as 'flexible' and emphasized his commitment to protecting Ontario's jobs. This sentiment was echoed on Wednesday when he extended an olive branch to Diageo.
The question remains whether Diageo will reciprocate Ford's gesture and provide a concrete job replacement strategy. Ford believes that Diageo's plants in Manitoba and Quebec will eventually close, further justifying his punishment of the company.
